In the production planner, why is the device heat per sec higher than it should be?

Since all heating devices need a furnace, I add 0.4 heat/sec for a crucible and 1 heat/sec for everything else. A stone furnace usually has 2 or 3 crucibles, so I took the average of 2.5. This should be a pretty close approximation in most cases, but if you need exact figures use the heating calculator.

How do you determine the item cost? Does this come from the game?

No, the item cost does not come directly from the game. It is calculated based on the recipes for that item. If there are multiple recipes to produce an item, the cheapest one is used. It's calculated by summing the cost of the components and the heat cost (if any)

How is the heat cost calculated?

The heat cost is calculated by determining the length of time the recipe uses and the device used to get a total heat amount, then that amount is divided by the approximate cost per heat produced, which is about 20 heat per copper for most fuels. Note that, while this is fairly accurate in the early game, it would be less accurate as the player progresses due to increased fuel efficiency and reduced building time. This means that the heat cost will be over-estimated later in the game. Luckily the heat cost is relatively minor compared to the component cost for most items, so this difference should be fairly negligible.
